The Green Impact Capacity project, recipient of the RSI – POR FESR 2014–2020 regional funding award from the Tuscany Regional Authority, marked a major step forward in the innovation and upgrade of Altair Chemical’s production processes. Through extensive research and development (R&D), the initiative introduced advanced technological solutions, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Key Achievements
The core innovation of the project was the installation of a new electrolysis line, consisting of two 56-element electrolysers. This upgrade led to a 50% increase in plant productivity, thanks to the use of next-generation bipolar elements with enhanced energy efficiency. Six of these elements had already been installed as a pilot phase to assess performance.
At the same time, the brine purification system was upgraded to ensure optimal purity for use in membrane cells, further increasing the efficiency of the production cycle. Tests and assays were conducted on raw materials to customise characteristics to meet production requirements.

New Process Development
A major aspect of the project involved the development of new production processes, including:
To enhance sustainability, a new potassium hydroxide concentration line was developed using a multiple-effect evaporator system to streamline steam consumption. Ultrasound technology was also adopted to accelerate chemical reaction kinetics, resulting in shorter production time and greater efficiency.
Sustainability & Efficiency
The project also included:
With a total investment of approximately €14 million, the Green Impact Capacity project was successfully completed, delivering significant technological and environmental improvements across Altair Chemical’s production operations.
This initiative has strengthened the company’s positioning within the chemical industry and confirmed its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
