Renewability Project with Solar Power Plants in Lazio – Abruzzo

In September 2022, Altair Chemical joined Renewability, the first community of renewable energy consumers in Italy. Its founding members include EPQ and Dolomiti Energia Trading.

The Renewability model brings industrial companies together within a consortium company whose purpose is to invest in the construction of renewable energy plants and supply each member with electricity produced by those plants.

Altair Chemical’s strategic decision to join the initiative was driven by the intention to:

  • Increase the sustainability of its operations by expanding the share of electricity demand met by green energy;
  • Contribute to the development of new renewable energy resources in Italy, enabled by a long-term (30-year) investment horizon;
  • Reduce reliance on the electricity market, which is currently marked by extreme volatility.

Thanks to this innovative model, Altair Chemical becomes a PROSUMER — both an energy producer and consumer  — allowing the company to secure a portion of its electricity needs independently from the market. By covering only the industrial costs of the initiative, Altair Chemical benefits from a renewable electricity cost below €60/MWh over the entire useful life of the plants.

As part of the Renewability project, the company has invested €10 million in the construction of the first cluster of renewable energy plants located in Lazio and Abruzzo.

The first cluster — 24 MW of photovoltaic capacity — was built by Marseglia Amaranto Green S.r.l., which will also manage the maintenance of the plants throughout their operational lifetime.

Alongside Altair Chemical, two other leading Italian industrial companies have joined the initiative:

  • a major steel group and European leader in the merchant bar segment
  • a leading company in the chemical–pharmaceutical sector.

Altair Chemical thus becomes the owner of one-third of the electricity produced, securing approximately 12,000 MWh/year of renewable energy in its portfolio.

By joining Renewability, the company actively contributes to the growth of renewable energy in Italy while also strengthening its own energy independence. The project provides the opportunity to decouple part of the company’s electricity consumption from the market, ensuring direct access to renewable energy — an investment which is a significant milestone in Altair Chemical’s sustainability journey.
