Altair Chemical has been awarded the 2025 Responsible Care Prize, the annual recognition granted by Federchimica to highlight industrial projects that best embody the principles of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. The jury was particularly impressed by the projectPotassium Carbonate from CO₂ Capture”, developed at the company’s Saline di Volterra (Pisa) facility—a solution that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by capturing part of the carbon dioxide generated during production and reusing it as a raw material.

The system enables the use of up to 8,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, half of which is captured directly from the on-site cogeneration unit. This process reduces the use of methane in the targeted plant by 20% and reuses 30% of the CO₂ emitted by the cogenerator. As a result, externally sourced synthetic CO₂ is no longer required, eliminating road transport for this input entirely.

The award ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 26, in Milan, during the presentation of the 31st Responsible Care Report, as part of the National Day for Safety, Health and Sustainable Development organized by Federchimica. The Responsible Care program, active in Italy since 1992 and now adopted by around 170 companies, promotes a safer, more efficient and more sustainable chemical industry, in line with both European and international environmental goals.
