Thanks to a highly efficient and sustainable industrial process, Altair Chemical uses <span class=\"s1\"><b>spent hydrochloric acid<\/b><\/span> from steel pickling as a <span class=\"s1\"><b>secondary raw material<\/b><\/span> to produce <span class=\"s1\"><b>high-quality ferric and ferrous chloride<\/b><\/span>. This solution enables the recovery and valorisation of industrial residues, turning them into an essential product for <span class=\"s1\"><b>drinking water and wastewater treatment<\/b><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The innovation behind this project stems from a collaboration with the <span class=\"s1\"><b>Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pisa<\/b><\/span> and a close partnership with a <span class=\"s1\"><b>steel mill located just 80 km<\/b><\/span> from the Saline plant. This <span class=\"s1\"><b>short supply chain model<\/b><\/span> significantly reduces transportation and emissions, further improving the sustainability of the production process. Moreover, the use of spent acid allows for up to <span class=\"s1\"><b>25% reduction in ferrous raw material requirements<\/b><\/span>, reducing the environmental impact of the entire supply chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <span class=\"s1\"><b>ferric chloride<\/b><\/span> obtained through this process <span class=\"s1\"><b>complies with the UNI EN 888:2023 standard<\/b><\/span> and has a <span class=\"s1\"><b>high purity level<\/b><\/span>, making it suitable not only for wastewater treatment but also for the <span class=\"s1\"><b>drinking-grade treatment of water intended for human consumption<\/b><\/span>. This aspect confirms the effectiveness of the circular model being adopted, which turns industrial waste into a <span class=\"s1\"><b>valuable resource for society<\/b><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For this innovative project, <span class=\"s1\"><b>Altair Chemical<\/b><\/span>, the chlor-alkali division of <span class=\"s1\"><b>Esseco Industrial<\/b><\/span>, was awarded ranking among the <span class=\"s1\"><b>Top 10 Italian Companies in the Circular Economy<\/b><\/span> category of the <span class=\"s1\"><b>Sustainable Development Award at Ecomondo 2024<\/b><\/span>. This recognition confirms the company&#8217;s commitment to combining <span class=\"s1\"><b>innovation and environmental stewardship<\/b><\/span>, positioning it as a benchmark in water treatment and environmental impact reduction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Altair Chemical\u2019s approach is based on the belief that <span class=\"s1\"><b>innovation and collaboration<\/b><\/span> with research institutions and universities are fundamental to the sector\u2019s sustainability.
