Altair Chemical invests in energy efficiency with the completion of high-efficiency cogeneration plant revamp

A strategic investment aimed at optimizing energy efficiency, reducing consumption, and improving the sustainability of our industrial operations: Altair Chemical has successfully completed the revamping of its High-Efficiency Cogeneration Plant at the Saline di Volterra (PI) production site.

What is cogeneration?
Cogeneration is a process that allows for the simultaneous production of electrical and thermal energy, maximizing the potential of the fuel used. The upgraded plant features a high-efficiency gas turbine supplied by one of the world’s leading manufacturers. It offers optimized electrical output and includes a heat recovery system to produce steam and hot water.

All of the energy generated is used internally at the Saline site, contributing to lower emissions and greater energy independence.

A strategic investment
After 12 years of operation, the cogeneration system underwent a major upgrade to ensure ongoing efficiency and reliability. The revamp included:

• The replacement of the electric generator, enhancing system stability and reliability
• The renewal of the heat recovery system, resulting in an approximate 10% increase in steam production
• Consumption optimization: improved energy recovery has led to a reduction of 250,000 standard cubic meters of methane, decreasing reliance on dedicated boilers

Efficiency and environmental impact reduction
With this project, Altair Chemical strengthens its commitment to energy transition and reducing the environmental footprint of its production processes. The revamped cogeneration plant allows us to:
